Albania is strengthening its military capabilities through a new partnership with Israel’s Elbit Systems, a deal that will significantly expand the country’s artillery power and domestic defense manufacturing. Under the agreement, Albania will receive the 155mm ATMOS truck-mounted howitzer, 120mm SPEAR mortar systems, and two tactical drones—Magni-X and Thor—marking one of the most substantial upgrades to its NATO-aligned defense posture in recent years.

Elbit’s support goes beyond providing equipment, as the company will also help Albania establish its own production facilities in the country’s north. This step aims to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and kick-start a long-term industrial capability. Initially, Albania will acquire 10 drones before shifting into local manufacturing. The Magni-X quadcopter is a lightweight ISR platform capable of carrying 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) of payload for up to an hour, even in GPS-denied environments. The Thor drone, weighing around 15 kilograms (33 pounds), offers strike capabilities and can deploy small munitions while flying for about 70 minutes without a heavy load.

The latest deal complements broader international efforts to boost Albania’s defense modernization. The United States has supplied armored vehicles, small arms, advisory assistance, and military training to help the country meet NATO standards. European partners have also played key roles in the build-up of Albania’s capabilities. Italy has contributed naval platforms and patrol boats, while Germany has provided communication systems and logistical support to strengthen Albania’s interoperability with allied forces.

Turkey has further expanded its military cooperation with Albania by supplying drones and offering training to enhance mechanized infantry operations. Collectively, these initiatives reflect a widespread push to modernize Albania’s armed forces, strengthen regional security, and ensure the country can respond to evolving threats across the Balkans and beyond.
