BAE Systems has secured a $162-million contract with the US Army to begin production of major lightweight structures for the M777 howitzer, utilizing supply chains in both the United States and United Kingdom. The work focuses on the howitzer’s titanium components—key to its ultralight design, which weighs just four tons, less than half the mass of typical 155mm towed guns.
Manufacturing is already underway at a new artisanal facility in Sheffield, UK, with coordination extending across both nations. The program’s launch was accelerated by renewed operational interest, especially after the M777’s performance in Ukraine, where around 200 guns have supported frontline engagements. Initial deliveries are scheduled to start in 2026.
The compact, versatile M777 can be rapidly airlifted or towed, enhancing artillery mobility and flexibility for both emergent and established allied forces.
