Australia has significantly increased its defense cooperation with the Philippines in 2025, unveiling over 20 joint training activities and exchanges through the Joint Australian Training Team–Philippines program. This marks more than double the number of engagements compared to 2024, demonstrating a marked intensification of military collaboration between the two nations. The expanded program is designed to strengthen bilateral ties, bolster regional security, and improve the overall readiness and interoperability of both forces.

As part of this ramped-up cooperation, Australian reconnaissance troops from the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, recently conducted field exercises with Philippine soldiers from the 4th and 10th Infantry Divisions at Camp Kibaritan in the southern Philippines. These exercises primarily focused on territorial defense strategies and reconnaissance techniques, such as observation, patrol methods, and intelligence gathering, which are crucial for maintaining situational awareness in diverse operational environments. Both militaries actively exchanged tactical knowledge to refine joint operational capabilities and adapt to evolving security challenges in the region.

The training also highlighted differences in approach between the two forces: Philippine reconnaissance emphasized larger troop movements for area control, while Australian units utilized small-unit tactics, including low-signature reconnaissance to minimize detection risks. Australian techniques included counter-drone operations and managing thermal and infrared signatures to avoid enemy sensors. Conversely, Philippine troops showcased their expertise in self-sustenance, such as sourcing water and foraging, based on their extensive counterinsurgency experience. This blending of diverse operational methods helps deepen mutual understanding and better prepares both armies for joint missions.
