BAE Systems has officially unveiled the first newly manufactured Archer 155 mm self-propelled howitzer for the Swedish Army, marking the restart of domestic Archer production after several years. The vehicle is the first from a new production batch and is mounted on the MAN HX2 8×8 military truck, representing a significant evolution in Sweden’s artillery modernization strategy focused on improved mobility, logistics compatibility, and long-term sustainment.
The rollout follows a September 2023 contract between the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and BAE Systems Bofors for 48 new Archer artillery systems. Announced at the DSEI 2023 defense exhibition in London, the deal—valued at several billion Swedish kronor—aims to rapidly rebuild Sweden’s artillery strength after earlier Archer systems were transferred to Ukraine. Crucially, the agreement covers entirely new-build platforms, ensuring full lifecycle support and reinforcing Sweden’s sovereign artillery production capability.
Earlier Archer variants were mounted on the Volvo A30D 6×6 articulated hauler, a civilian-derived chassis adapted for military use. While highly effective in Sweden’s challenging terrain, the Volvo platform limited payload growth, protection upgrades, and interoperability as Sweden aligned more closely with NATO logistics standards. These constraints became increasingly relevant as artillery systems faced higher survivability and integration demands on modern battlefields.
The new MAN HX2 8×8 chassis addresses these issues with a fully militarized design offering higher payload capacity, improved driveline durability, and optional ballistic and mine protection. Enhanced electrical power generation supports advanced digital fire control, sensor integration, and future upgrades, including extended-range and precision munitions. Retaining its automated 155 mm L52 gun, Archer continues to deliver high rates of fire, MRSI capability, and ranges exceeding 40 km—cementing its status as one of the world’s most capable wheeled self-propelled artillery systems.
