BAE Systems has entered a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC) to advance the 52-caliber version of the M109 self-propelled howitzer prototype.

The M109-52 is a modernization of the existing M109A7 system, integrating Rheinmetall’s 155mm, 52-caliber L52 cannon. This upgrade follows the discontinuation of the Army’s Extended Range Cannon Artillery program, which aimed to develop a 58-caliber cannon but was halted due to barrel wear issues.

The M109-52 is now positioned as a key candidate to fulfill the Army’s long-range precision fires requirements.
