BAE Systems Hägglunds has entered a partnership with Rheinmetall to integrate the L44A1 120-millimeter low-recoil cannon into the new CV90120 light tank, a variant of the proven CV90 infantry fighting vehicle. The collaboration combines BAE’s expertise in armored platforms with Rheinmetall’s decades-long experience in advanced gun systems to deliver a high-mobility, precision firepower solution.

The CV90120 is built on BAE’s latest MkIV chassis, offering improved engine power, reinforced transmission, and upgraded digital architecture for enhanced situational awareness. It also features active protection systems designed to counter modern battlefield threats, providing a blend of agility, survivability, and lethality suitable for both conventional and expeditionary missions.

For operators already fielding CV90 variants, the new platform ensures logistical and training compatibility, allowing armed forces to streamline support and spare parts management. This interoperability aligns with NATO’s growing emphasis on modular design and cross-platform integration.

Rheinmetall’s L44A1 cannon, derived from its renowned L/44 smoothbore design used on main battle tanks such as the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams, incorporates advanced recoil-reduction technology and a muzzle brake. These features allow it to be mounted on lighter tracked vehicles without sacrificing firepower. Fully compatible with NATO-standard 120mm ammunition, including programmable and high-energy rounds, the system enhances the CV90120’s capability to engage a wide range of threats with precision and efficiency.
