BDT UK has introduced the Beretta New Assault Rifle Platform alongside a Sako AR-15-style system, marking a significant step in its proposal to replace the British Armed Forces’ current standard-issue assault rifle. The unveiling demonstrates the company’s intent to provide modernized, high-performance weapon systems for the UK’s next-generation infantry needs.

The initiative is part of Project Grayburn, a defense program aimed at defining the capabilities and specifications required for the successor to the SA80 L85, a rifle that has served the British military since the 1980s. This project reflects the Ministry of Defence’s push to modernize small arms in preparation for future operational demands.

The SA80 L85, despite its long service history and multiple upgrades, is planned to be retired by 2030. In the meantime, it will remain in use as the transition to the new platform progresses. The gradual phasing out will ensure continuity of operations while the new systems are tested and deployed.

Procurement plans outline the potential acquisition of up to 172,000 next-generation rifles, delivered in phases over the coming decade. This phased rollout will allow the armed forces to adapt to new technology while maintaining operational readiness.
