Boeing, Saab, and BAE Systems have formed a new partnership to deliver a next-generation pilot training capability for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The collaboration supports the UK’s 2025 Strategic Defence Review and focuses on preparing pilots for the latest generation of combat aircraft. BAE Systems will lead the program, including UK-based final assembly that is expected to create high-value manufacturing jobs.
At the center of the proposal is the T-7A Red Hawk, a modern training aircraft developed for advanced fighter preparation. The system blends live flight training with synthetic, virtual, and constructive simulation environments, enabling pilots to rehearse complex missions more efficiently and at lower cost. The companies will also explore opportunities to expand UK industry involvement through a strengthened supply chain.
Originally selected by the US Air Force in 2018 to replace the T-38 Talon, the T-7A is designed to prepare pilots for fourth- to sixth-generation fighters such as the F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor. In the United States, the aircraft has already begun operational use at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, where it will gradually phase out the T-38 fleet by the late 2020s.
Beyond the UK and US, Boeing and Saab continue to promote the T-7A to several allied nations, including India, South Korea, and NATO members in Europe. The companies highlight the aircraft’s ability to train pilots transitioning to modern and legacy fighter platforms.
