China has officially showcased its LY-1 high-power laser weapon for the first time during a major military parade in Beijing, the country’s largest display of armed strength to date. The event marked the system’s public debut, highlighting Beijing’s growing interest in directed-energy weapons.
The laser, mounted on an eight-wheeled HZ141 vehicle, is said to be designed primarily for shipborne defense roles. The scale of the land-based configuration, however, suggests capacity for larger power modules, which could enable stronger energy output and enhanced operational capability.
The system features a turret with a large beam aperture, aided by electro-optical and infrared sensors to track and engage targets. Additionally, a box-shaped module positioned on the vehicle may house radar and passive RF sensors, further strengthening its detection and targeting functions.
By unveiling the LY-1, China signals its commitment to advancing laser-based defensive systems, positioning them as a possible future mainstay in naval protection against aerial and missile threats.
