Denmark has awarded Rheinmetall a multi-year framework contract worth several hundred million euros to supply ammunition for a wide range of military platforms, including infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled air defense systems. The seven-year agreement reflects Copenhagen’s ongoing efforts to modernize its land forces and strengthen air defense and armored warfare capabilities.

The contract covers multiple ammunition types, including medium-caliber rounds as well as 120mm tank ammunition and 155mm artillery shells. Initial orders under the framework agreement include high five-digit quantities of 30×173mm and 35×228mm cartridges, with a combined value in the low three-digit million-euro range. These munitions will support both air defense and mechanized infantry operations.

Procurement of the 30×173mm ammunition aligns with Denmark’s recent acquisition of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 mobile air defense system in 2024. The system integrates a 30mm cannon, missile launchers, and advanced sensors on a single platform and uses programmable airburst ammunition to counter drones and other small, fast-moving aerial threats. The 35×228mm rounds, meanwhile, are intended for Denmark’s CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles, which are equipped with the Bushmaster III 35mm cannon.

Denmark has continued to expand its CV90 fleet, recently ordering 44 additional vehicles from BAE Systems, building on a previous 2024 order for 115 units. In addition to medium-caliber munitions, Rheinmetall will supply more than 1,000 rounds of 120mm kinetic-energy tank ammunition under the contract, with this portion of the order valued in the high single-digit million-euro range.
