Rheinmetall expects to finalize a multi-billion-euro contract with the German Armed Forces for its Skyranger self-propelled air defense systems by the end of 2025. According to CEO Armin Papperger, the deal’s estimated value falls between 6 billion and 8 billion euros ($6.9–$9.2 billion) and will cover a “significant number” of systems.

Although precise quantities were not disclosed, past planning documents from Berlin suggest a possible requirement for 500 to 600 Skyranger 30 units in various configurations, Defence Industry Europe reported. The procurement process is expected to launch under a framework agreement, which will be followed by phased execution contracts.

Current discussions outline two delivery phases—the first running until 2029, and the second from 2029 to 2035. This approach will allow for a steady rollout of the systems and potential adjustments based on operational needs.

The acquisition supports Germany’s pledge to meet NATO’s defense spending targets, with the government aiming to dedicate around 3.5 percent of GDP to defense by 2029. NATO’s own capability targets are also scheduled for review that year, potentially influencing future procurement strategies.
