German soldiers are set to enhance battlefield awareness with the introduction of SitaWare Edge, a situational awareness software developed by Danish company Systematic. The Bundeswehr recently signed a contract to field the system, which is designed specifically for dismounted troops operating in dynamic and often disconnected environments.

The software equips soldiers with mission planning tools directly accessible through mobile devices or tablets. Its interface integrates mapping, force tracking, chat, and operational planning into one platform, requiring minimal training. It can also connect with third-party applications, enabling real-time intelligence sharing, unit monitoring, and operational coordination between soldiers in the field and higher command.

A key feature of SitaWare Edge is its ability to function effectively in low-bandwidth environments. It leverages tactical radios, satellites, and alternative communication networks to ensure secure connectivity even when conventional channels are disrupted. The contract also provides Germany with a development package, giving the Bundeswehr the flexibility to tailor the system with new features and integrations to meet evolving mission requirements.

This initiative forms part of Germany’s broader Mission Enabling Service, a modernization program aimed at strengthening digital command-and-control (C2) across all branches of the armed forces. It also aligns with NATO’s 2022 Digital Transformation Vision, which calls for greater interoperability and information-sharing among allied forces. Systematic has long supported the Bundeswehr’s digitalization drive, and a seven-year maintenance agreement signed in 2023 guarantees continued support and updates for the SitaWare suite.
