General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has secured a major contract to deliver next-generation reconnaissance vehicles to the German Army. The deal, valued at approximately 3 billion euros ($3.48 billion), covers the supply of 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles to the army’s Reconnaissance Corps. Deliveries are planned between 2029 and 2032, marking a significant modernization step for Germany’s ground forces.
The contract includes training simulators, logistics support, and an option to procure 82 additional units in the future. The Luchs 2 is based on GDELS’s advanced Piranha 6×6 wheeled platform, offering superior mobility, amphibious capability, and improved survivability over its predecessor, the Fennek 4×4 reconnaissance vehicle.
Designed for stealth and flexibility, the Luchs 2 integrates networked reconnaissance sensors, enhanced communication systems, and features that minimize acoustic and thermal signatures. Its gross weight of 25 tons and payload capacity of 7.5 tons ensure operational adaptability across various terrains and mission types.
A separate contract is also being finalized with Rheinmetall for the supply of up to 310 25mm KBA automatic cannons, providing the new vehicles with medium-range firepower up to 2,700 meters and a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. Meanwhile, Hensoldt Optronics will deliver the sensor suites, e.sigma will provide the training systems, and Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland will supply camouflage solutions, ensuring a complete, integrated combat system for Germany’s reconnaissance units.
