Germany has signed defense procurement contracts valued at more than €2 billion ($2.3 billion) with Finnish armored vehicle manufacturer Patria for the acquisition of 876 Common Armored Vehicle Systems (CAVS). The order includes four different variants of the platform, featuring configurations equipped with Patria’s NEMO mortar turret as well as Kongsberg’s Protector RS4 remotely operated weapon station.

According to the agreement, deliveries of the CAVS platforms to the German Armed Forces are scheduled to begin in 2026. The deal also includes a significant industrial cooperation component, with Patria committing to technology transfer for German defense companies FFG, JWT, and KNDS. This follows an industrial teaming agreement signed in 2024 to support domestic CAVS production and meet Germany’s long-term operational requirements.

Vehicles manufactured under the German local production program are expected to become available from 2027. The CAVS initiative was launched by the Finnish Ministry of Defence in 2020 to provide Finland and partner nations with a standardized, next-generation armored vehicle fleet based on the Patria 6×6 armored personnel carrier, designed for a service life of up to 30 years.

Built to NATO standards, the Patria 6×6 measures eight meters in length, offers a payload capacity of nine tons, and can carry up to 10 personnel. Powered by a 394-horsepower Scania diesel engine, the vehicle has a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a range of 700 kilometers. Patria is currently managing nearly 2,000 CAVS orders, with more than 250 vehicles already delivered, as the program expands to seven member nations, including Germany, the UK, and Norway.
