South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace has strengthened its role in Poland’s defense modernization program by signing two new agreements with local defense organizations. The latest deals focus on certifying ammunition and enhancing missile production capacity, marking another step in Warsaw’s efforts to expand its domestic defense industry.

The agreements build on Poland’s earlier contracts with Hanwha for K9 self-propelled howitzers and K239 Chunmoo rocket artillery systems, both of which were fast-tracked after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. With defense demand rising, Poland is pushing to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers by developing in-country production capabilities in partnership with trusted allies.

One of the new agreements is a memorandum of understanding with the state-owned Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU). Under this partnership, both sides will jointly test 155-millimeter ammunition on Polish Armed Forces platforms, exchange technical knowledge, and pursue new research and development projects.

Hanwha Aerospace noted that the collaboration will not only help certify Poland’s growing fleet of self-propelled howitzers but also support long-term goals to establish a sustainable European ammunition production hub, ensuring security of supply for NATO operations.
