India has selected BAE Systems Hägglunds’ BvS10 articulated all-terrain tracked vehicle (AATV) as its next-generation mobility platform, marking the system’s first deployment anywhere in Asia. Under the program, the Indian Army will induct 18 BvS10 vehicles, designated “Sindhu,” all in troop-carrying configuration.

The acquisition was finalized through a contract—value undisclosed—with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which will oversee full-scale manufacturing at its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, according to a Breaking Defense report. BAE Systems, the original developer of the BvS10, will provide technical, design, and engineering support, along with a complete integrated logistics support package for maintenance, training, and long-term sustainment. Deliveries are set to begin within two years.

India initiated the AATV procurement in 2022, seeking a platform that could operate seamlessly across diverse environments, including high-altitude regions, salt flats, and swampy terrain. BAE and L&T introduced the BvS10 to India in 2023, beating the domestic competitor—Prominent Comtech’s Talwar ATV—to secure the contract. The platform will be produced under the Make in India initiative, with more than 60% indigenous content, ensuring a resilient and locally supported supply chain.

The BvS10 Sindhu variant has been specially adapted for Indian military needs, featuring a 350-horsepower engine enhanced with a larger turbocharger. Trials demonstrated reliable performance at altitudes above 18,000 feet (5,486 meters). The vehicle’s articulated twin-cab structure allows exceptional mobility across snow, mud, rocks, steep gradients, and broken terrain. It can transport personnel, cargo, or weapons and supports amphibious operations in flooded zones and coastal areas. Its modular architecture also enables multiple mission roles, including command and control, medical evacuation, and battlefield awareness.
