Indonesia’s state-owned defense company PT Pindad has entered into a partnership with Germany’s Rheinmetall AG to jointly develop advanced ammunition technologies, strengthening Indonesia’s domestic defense manufacturing base. The collaboration aims to accelerate technology transfer and production capability, supporting Indonesia’s long-term vision of achieving defense industry self-reliance.
The partnership with Rheinmetall, one of Europe’s leading defense firms, builds on Indonesia’s recent efforts to expand cooperation with global defense leaders. In early 2025, Jakarta signed a deal with France’s Dassault Aviation for the acquisition of Rafale fighter jets, reflecting the country’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces through diversified international partnerships.
PT Pindad has been actively pursuing multiple technology-sharing ventures, including joint projects with Turkey’s FNSS on the Kaplan medium tank, as well as collaborations with South Korean and Indian defense companies focused on ammunition production and vehicle systems. These initiatives are part of Indonesia’s strategy to build an integrated and competitive defense industrial ecosystem.
Parallel to these efforts, PT PAL Indonesia continues to expand its naval capabilities through joint shipbuilding programs with partners from the Netherlands and Japan. Together, these partnerships highlight Indonesia’s broader Defense Industry Policy, which emphasizes domestic capability development, international collaboration, and access to cutting-edge technologies to support national defense modernization.
