Israel’s Ministry of Defense has entered into a $150 million agreement with American defense contractor AM General to acquire hundreds of Humvees (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles), along with spare parts and logistical support. The procurement, valued at approximately 500 million Israeli new shekels, is being financed through U.S. military aid. The initial batch of vehicles is scheduled for delivery by the end of this year.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Ground Forces will deploy these vehicles to replenish stocks depleted by nearly two years of intensive military operations in Gaza. The acquisition is also intended to bolster Israel’s readiness for future combat scenarios. The Humvees, known for their versatility, will be configured to transport over ten soldiers per unit, evacuate multiple wounded personnel, and offer advanced fire support capabilities tailored to Israeli operational needs.

Humvees have long served as a core tactical vehicle within the U.S. military, supporting a wide range of missions such as troop movement, supply transport, and special operations. However, they are gradually being replaced by the more modern and robust Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs).

Israel has also pursued the JLTV platform to enhance its ground mobility capabilities. In 2023, the country acquired 75 JLTVs through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program and secured additional units via direct commercial contracts. A further, undisclosed order followed in November 2024, indicating Israel’s broader interest in modernizing its tactical vehicle fleet.
