The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Italy involving Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and associated equipment, valued at approximately $211 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has formally notified Congress of the proposed sale.
Italy has requested to purchase 30 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, 40 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, and 2 AIM-120C-7 guidance sections. The package also includes spare control sections, containers, repair parts, software, training, technical documentation, and U.S. government and contractor support services.
This sale is aligned with U.S. foreign policy and national security priorities by enhancing the capabilities of Italy, a key NATO ally, and supporting European stability. The advanced missiles will significantly bolster Italy’s ability to counter current and emerging air threats while enhancing interoperability with NATO forces. Italy already operates AMRAAM systems and is well-positioned to integrate these new assets.
The sale will not affect the military balance in the region. RTX Corporation (Tucson, AZ) will serve as the principal contractor. No offset agreements have been proposed at this stage, and the sale will not require additional U.S. personnel to be stationed in Italy. There will be no negative impact on U.S. defense readiness.
The estimated total reflects the maximum possible cost based on initial planning, with the final value to be determined upon contract finalization.
