The Italian Army has officially received its first upgraded Ariete C2 main battle tank, delivered by the Iveco-Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) at the Cecchignola military complex near Rome. This marks the beginning of a broader modernization program that includes the enhancement of 90 Ariete units to improve combat performance and extend service life.

The Ariete C2 upgrade focuses on three core areas: mobility, firepower, and operational command systems. The platform features a powerful 1,500-horsepower IVECO V-12 turbo diesel engine, offering a 20% boost in performance compared to its predecessor, the Ariete C1. Mobility is further enhanced through a redesigned suspension system with seven road wheels and four return rollers per side, supported by torsion bars and hydraulic bumpers for better shock absorption and terrain handling.

In terms of systems integration, the C2 variant is outfitted with Leonardo’s C2D/N EVO Command and Control system, allowing for seamless battlefield connectivity. This is coupled with a four-channel software-defined radio, satellite communications, and modern digital intercom systems to ensure interoperability in joint operations.

The upgraded tank provides significant advantages in targeting and situational awareness with thermal imaging-equipped day/night sights for both commander and gunner, as well as laser rangefinders and a new ballistic computer capable of calculating precise trajectories even while the vehicle is moving.

Its main armament includes a 120mm smoothbore gun that supports all standard NATO ammunition, ensuring compatibility across allied forces. For secondary weaponry, the Ariete C2 is equipped with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm turret-mounted machine gun for close-quarters and anti-air engagements.

The project is supported by a 10-year logistics support package, reflecting the Italian Army’s strategic investment in modernizing its armored fleet under a long-term defense initiative.
