The Leonardo-Rheinmetall joint venture has secured a contract to deliver 21 next-generation Lynx KF-41 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to the Italian Army. This marks the first delivery order under Italy’s ambitious Army Armoured Combat System (A2CS) program, which envisions the acquisition of up to 1,000 armored vehicles to modernize the nation’s land combat fleet.
Under the initial phase, five vehicles will be outfitted with Rheinmetall’s advanced Lance turret, while the remaining 16 will feature Leonardo’s Hitfist 30mm system. The agreement also outlines future plans to upgrade the entire fleet to the Hitfist configuration and includes options for 30 additional vehicles. Training and simulation systems will accompany the deal to support operational readiness and crew proficiency. Delivery of the first unit is expected by the end of 2025.
The Lynx KF-41, developed by Rheinmetall, is an evolution of the earlier KF31 model introduced in 2016. Designed for adaptability, it features a modular structure comprising a base drive module and interchangeable mission modules that allow quick reconfiguration for diverse battlefield roles. The 50-tonne vehicle can accommodate a three-person crew and eight passengers while maintaining strong mobility with an 850-kilowatt (1,140-horsepower) engine capable of speeds up to 65 km/h.
Equipped with the Lance 2.0 turret, the KF-41 employs a 35mm Wotan automatic cannon and two mission pods for optional systems, such as Spike LR2 anti-tank guided missiles, loitering munitions, or electronic warfare payloads. Its comprehensive active, passive, and reactive protection suite ensures survivability against RPGs and anti-tank threats. Thanks to its modular design, the Lynx KF-41 can perform multiple missions, including command and control, reconnaissance, medevac, and repair operations, making it a core component of Italy’s future armored force.
