Lithuania has launched a significant modernization effort at the Pabradė Training Area, committing €240 million ($278 million) to expand infrastructure for US rotational forces. The upgrades include improved barracks, enhanced dining facilities, new fitness centers, and long-term logistical support capabilities designed to sustain continuous US troop presence. A new “Soldier Center,” dedicated to four US soldiers who died in a training accident earlier this year, has also been officially opened as part of the project.
The modernization extends well beyond basic accommodations. Lithuanian officials are transforming Pabradė into a comprehensive training hub equipped to support joint operations and future NATO deployments. The upgrades encompass expanded training infrastructure, improved sustainment capabilities, and modern amenities intended to strengthen the operational readiness of both Lithuanian and US troops stationed in the region.
As part of the initiative, Lithuania has assumed responsibility for covering the operational costs associated with hosting all US forces in the country. This shift eases the logistical burden on the US Army while ensuring consistent support for more than 1,000 US troops currently rotating through Lithuania. The enhanced sustainment package also reinforces NATO’s deterrence posture and long-term defense cooperation on the eastern flank.
The investment aligns with a broader uptick in US-Lithuanian military collaboration. Joint activities such as Iron Wolf 2025, which gathered 3,700 troops and 700 vehicles in a major field exercise, and the recent BALTOPS 2025 HIMARS live-fire drills near the Baltic Sea demonstrate growing interoperability. These operations are helping Lithuania build experience with advanced long-range fire systems and enabling seamless integration with NATO’s collective defense framework.
