The Netherlands has signed a multi-year framework agreement with Rheinmetall to manufacture and supply a broad range of hand grenades for the Dutch armed forces, strengthening long-term access to critical infantry munitions. The agreement covers an initial five-year period, with an option to extend the contract for an additional two years.

Under the deal, Rheinmetall will deliver approximately 15 different grenade variants, though the specific types have not been publicly disclosed. While the contract’s total value was not revealed, the German defense company said the agreement falls within the double-digit million-euro range. Production will be carried out at Rheinmetall facilities in Trittau and Silberhütte in Germany, as well as Schwanenstadt, Austria.

The framework agreement builds on existing cooperation between the Netherlands and Rheinmetall, following earlier contracts covering 155mm artillery ammunition and 40mm munitions. By consolidating supply through a long-term arrangement, the Dutch Ministry of Defence aims to improve predictability, responsiveness, and industrial resilience within its ammunition procurement strategy.

The deal reflects a broader shift among European NATO members, including Germany and Estonia, toward scalable procurement models after the war in Ukraine exposed vulnerabilities in ammunition stockpiles and supply chains. For the Netherlands, the agreement ensures reliable access to grenades essential for close-quarters combat, urban operations, and training, while reducing dependence on non-European suppliers.
