Norway has signed a fresh agreement with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace to acquire 24 additional K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers, strengthening its artillery capabilities. This marks the third contract between Oslo and the defense manufacturer, highlighting a growing defense partnership. With the new purchase, Norway’s artillery fleet will expand to a total of 52 K9s by 2027.
According to Hanwha, the deal reflects its consistent ability to meet Norway’s expectations on cost, performance, and delivery timelines. The K9 has become a cornerstone of the Norwegian Armed Forces’ artillery modernization program, proving its effectiveness in a variety of conditions.
Norway’s journey with the K9 began in 2017 with a contract worth 1.8 billion kroner ($181 million). That initial order laid the foundation for replacing older artillery systems and modernizing the country’s firepower. In 2022, Oslo opted to procure more units, citing the howitzer’s strong performance in the harsh Arctic environment.
The K9 VIDAR, known for its mobility, firepower, and adaptability, has proven particularly valuable in Norway’s demanding terrain. The latest order further cements the system’s role as a central component of Norway’s defense strategy amid a shifting security landscape in Europe.
