Rheinmetall has signed a 300-million-euro ($348.6 million) contract to produce mobile, armored field hospitals for the German Armed Forces, marking a major step in Germany’s efforts to strengthen battlefield medical support. The new systems are designed to provide life-saving treatment closer to combat zones while ensuring protection for medical personnel and patients.

Deliveries of the field hospital systems are set to begin in 2029, with the platforms expected to serve German units stationed in Lithuania and other forward-deployed NATO areas. The long-term contract, which runs until 2040, includes provisions for additional orders if operational demands increase over time.

Built to meet NATO’s Role 2B medical standard, each hospital unit will be capable of conducting emergency surgeries and intensive care operations in austere environments. Each setup will comprise 11 armored HX-series trucks, carrying detachable medical containers that allow the hospital to be rapidly deployed or relocated without lengthy setup times.

The system leverages Rheinmetall’s battle-tested HX military truck chassis, known for its mobility, durability, and protection on rough terrain. Once operational, these mobile medical platforms are expected to significantly reduce response times and improve treatment outcomes for severely injured soldiers, offering a critical upgrade to Germany’s field medical infrastructure.
