KNDS has selected Rolls-Royce to supply its mtu MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engines for the latest batches of European Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The contract covers more than 300 engine sets, which will be fitted into Leopard 2 fleets operated by Germany, Lithuania, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The agreement marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to modernize and expand Europe’s armored vehicle capabilities amid rising regional security demands.
Rolls-Royce confirmed that its Power Systems division will begin deliveries of the engines in 2026. The company has seen a sharp surge in demand for military propulsion systems over the past year, with government procurements now representing roughly 25 percent of the division’s total turnover. The new Leopard 2 engine order further strengthens Rolls-Royce’s position as a key supplier for European defense programs.
The mtu MB 873 Ka-501 is a liquid-cooled, 12-cylinder diesel engine capable of producing approximately 1,500 horsepower. Renowned for its durability, fuel efficiency, and high power output, the engine provides the Leopard 2 with strong mobility and battlefield endurance. When integrated into the tank, it enables road speeds of around 70 kilometers per hour and an operational range of roughly 340 kilometers.
As European countries continue to upgrade their armored forces, the new engine deliveries are expected to bolster the performance and longevity of the Leopard 2 platform. The propulsion upgrade will support NATO-aligned armies in maintaining high readiness levels and ensuring operational reliability across diverse terrains.
