Kalashnikov, the well-known Russian arms manufacturer, has completed production of the first batch of AM-17 compact assault rifles chambered in 5.45mm ammunition. This marks a key milestone toward launching the weapon into full-scale production for wider military use.
The rifle has successfully cleared state and military certification, alongside combat trials in Ukraine. Operational feedback from these deployments led to refinements in the weapon’s design, according to reports by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The AM-17 project originated from a request by Russian forces for a lightweight, compact firearm tailored for vehicle crews, special units, and law enforcement personnel. With a folding length of under 50 centimeters and a weight of only 2.5 kilograms, the rifle is optimized for confined environments such as trenches, armored vehicles, and urban combat.
Capable of firing all standard 5.45mm rounds used by Russian forces, the AM-17 boasts an effective range of roughly 400 meters and a firing rate of about 800 rounds per minute. Its development underscores Russia’s strategic shift toward lighter, mobile small arms suited for fast-paced and urbanized warfare.
