Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab a contract valued at 1.5 billion Swedish kronor ($162.9 million) to supply Trackfire Remote Weapon Stations (RWS) equipped with counter-drone capabilities. The procurement will support the Swedish Army and the Amphibious Battalion 2030 program, which is focused on strengthening Sweden’s coastal and amphibious defense posture as the country deepens its integration with NATO.

The Trackfire RWS will form part of a broader modernization effort aimed at improving operations in archipelagos and littoral environments. Under the Amphibious Battalion 2030 initiative, the Swedish Armed Forces are introducing new platforms and systems, including advanced mortar boats fitted with Patria’s NEMO mortar system for indirect fire, alongside Trackfire weapon stations to enhance direct firepower and aerial threat protection.

Deliveries of the Trackfire systems are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028. Designed for modern, high-tempo combat operations, the remote weapon station can engage targets while firing on the move and provide effective aerial coverage when mounted on naval vessels, land vehicles, or deployed in fixed defensive roles.

The system features a stabilized sensor module that is decoupled from the weapon’s axes, isolating it from recoil and allowing operators to maintain continuous visual contact with targets. This design significantly reduces target acquisition time and improves engagement accuracy, particularly in dynamic environments.

For counter-drone missions, Trackfire is equipped with a 30×113mm M230LF Bushmaster chain gun capable of firing proximity-fuzed ammunition to defeat uncrewed aerial systems. The RWS is also compatible with a range of alternative weapon effectors, including heavy and general-purpose machine guns and 40mm grenade launchers, and can be integrated with non-lethal effectors and electronic jamming systems.
