South Korea and Malaysia have signed a new defense cooperation agreement that will expand their partnership in weapons development and military modernization. The accord establishes a government-to-government framework for joint projects, encompassing fighter jet production, naval shipbuilding, and missile system collaboration.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea highlighted that the agreement is the culmination of “long-standing trust and effort,” and represents only the second defense industry pact Malaysia has ever signed with another nation. Through this framework, both sides plan to engage in joint research and development, co-production of defense technologies, and international marketing of jointly developed systems.

Seoul’s defense agency emphasized that South Korea aims to serve as a “true partner” in Malaysia’s military modernization, contributing to the nation’s defense self-reliance and to regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Defense ties between the two countries date back to 1993, when South Korea exported K200 infantry fighting vehicles to Malaysia. Their cooperation deepened in 2023, when Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) secured a $920 million deal to supply 18 FA-50 light combat aircraft to the Royal Malaysian Air Force, underscoring the growing trust between the two Asian defense partners.
