Exosens, a prominent imaging technology firm, has announced a landmark agreement to deliver 17,000 monocular night vision devices to the Spanish Army, marking one of the country’s most ambitious night vision modernization projects yet. Production duties for these devices will rest with Night Vision Lasers Spain (NVLS), a subsidiary recently acquired by Exosens.
Central to this deal is a newly designed monocular featuring a wide 50-degree field of view, built around advanced 16mm 4G image intensifier tubes. Unlike traditional binoculars, monocular devices utilize a single lens and can be easily mounted on helmets or firearms, providing soldiers clear vision in low-light or total darkness. This upgraded model expands the visible area by over 60 percent compared to conventional 40-degree systems—all while retaining its compact form and light weight.
The integration of Exosens’ high-performance 16mm 4G intensifier tubes ensures superior resolution and sensitivity, reinforcing operational effectiveness for Spanish troops operating in challenging environments. The contract will be fulfilled gradually from 2025 through 2028, underlining Madrid’s commitment to arming its land forces with state-of-the-art optical technology.
This modernization effort follows previous Spanish defense acquisitions, such as the AN/PVS-14 monoculars in 2019 and 16mm 4G binoculars used by the Navy and Army. The push for enhanced night vision mirrors wider trends among NATO militaries, where optical and sensor capabilities are recognized as critical for battlefield dominance alongside traditional platforms like armored vehicles and artillery.
