The Spanish Ministry of Defense has unveiled a significant artillery modernization effort involving the procurement of over 200 self-propelled howitzers to replace the aging M109 systems currently in service.
This ambitious program is divided into two major subprojects, collectively valued at more than €3 billion ($3.51 billion). The first subprogram aims to acquire 128 tracked self-propelled howitzers designed for both the Spanish Army and the Marine Infantry, with an estimated budget of €1.82 billion ($2.12 billion). These tracked platforms are expected to feature high mobility, extensive automation, reduced crew requirements, and rapid deployment capabilities. As outlined by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism, the systems must also offer barrels between 47 and 52 calibers and a firing range exceeding 40 kilometers using base-bleed ammunition.
The tracked artillery acquisition includes a complete support package comprising 128 ammunition supply vehicles, 21 recovery vehicles, 48 command vehicles for the army, 11 for the marines, and an optional 7 maintenance vehicles.
The second subprogram targets the procurement of 86 wheeled howitzers for the Spanish Army. These units—configured as 8×8 or 10×10 platforms—will be supplemented by an equal number of ammunition vehicles, 14 recovery vehicles, and 7 optional maintenance vehicles. This segment is expected to cost €1.18 billion ($1.38 billion).
