In a major defense move, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has confirmed the acquisition of 168 advanced M109A7 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers from the U.S., marking a sharp increase from its original order of just 40 units. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the nation’s artillery forces and retire older equipment. The purchase package also includes a classified number of M992A3 ammunition resupply vehicles, built on the same chassis as the M109A7, to ensure better logistical alignment and operational efficiency. Estimated at over NT$90 billion ($2.75 billion USD), this defense deal ranks among Taiwan’s largest in terms of ground force modernization. The M109A7, part of the U.S. Paladin PIM program, delivers enhanced firepower, digital targeting systems, upgraded mobility, and greater crew survivability—positioning Taiwan’s military to better endure and respond in contested environments. The system’s compatibility with modern battlefield networks further enhances long-term operational capabilities.
