Taiwan has received its second shipment of 42 M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks from the United States, reinforcing its defense forces amid rising regional tensions. The tanks were unloaded at the Port of Taipei in Bali District and transported to the Army Armor Training Command in Hukou, Hsinchu.

Although the delivery was initially expected the previous week, adverse weather conditions caused a brief delay. Once received, several tanks were transferred by flatbed trucks under heavy cover, escorted by military and local police units along Provincial Highway No. 61.

These deliveries are part of a broader arms deal approved by the US in 2019, which includes up to 108 Abrams tanks for Taiwan. The first batch of 38 was delivered in December 2024, with training commencing shortly after.

The M1A2 variant of the Abrams, developed by General Dynamics, boasts enhanced armor and weapon systems, including a 120mm main gun and multiple machine guns. Powered by a 1,500-horsepower turbine engine, it can reach speeds over 64 km/h and travel up to 418 km, making it a formidable addition to Taiwan’s armored fleet.
