Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has signed new agreements with Indian defense firms to jointly develop and produce advanced naval weapons and anti-submarine warfare systems. The move underscores TKMS’ growing role in supporting India’s long-term naval modernization agenda.

These partnerships are also consistent with New Delhi’s “Make in India” program, launched in 2014 to strengthen domestic production capacity, reduce dependence on foreign imports, and build India into a global manufacturing hub. By integrating German naval expertise with Indian industry, the collaborations are set to contribute both to the country’s defense readiness and its industrial base.

One of the major initiatives is a memorandum of understanding with Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies to develop and modernize heavyweight torpedoes. TKMS subsidiary Atlas Elektronik will provide technical support from Germany, while VEM will oversee local integration and testing. Further discussions are underway for wider joint efforts, including possible contributions to India’s P75(I) submarine program and the establishment of new manufacturing facilities to supply both local and international markets.
