The Ukrainian Defense Industry Joint Stock Company (Ukroboronprom) has partnered with US-based D&M Holding Company to establish a joint gunpowder manufacturing facility in the United States. This move, announced during the International Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Rome, is intended to bolster the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ammunition production capabilities amid growing global shortages.
Gunpowder is a critical component of ammunition, including 155mm artillery shells, which are in high demand due to the ongoing conflict. The new facility will alleviate Ukraine’s reliance on imported materials and expand its production capacity beyond domestic limits. Its location in the US also ensures security from Russian attacks, which remain a constant threat to Ukraine’s industrial infrastructure.
This initiative complements Ukraine’s recent step toward self-sufficiency, following the launch of local serial production of 155mm shells in September. Until then, Kyiv primarily depended on Soviet-era 152mm stockpiles and donated Western ammunition.
