The US State Department has authorized a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Norway, covering up to 50 MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedo systems in a deal estimated at $162 million. The package includes torpedo components, containers, software, training programs, spare and repair parts, and support equipment.
Along with hardware, the sale provides contractor engineering, technical, and logistical assistance to ensure smooth integration and sustained operational readiness. RTX Corporation of Arlington, Virginia, will serve as the principal contractor. To support implementation, US government and contractor personnel are expected to deploy temporarily to Norway for oversight and program management.
Washington underscored that the deal aligns with US foreign policy and security goals by strengthening Norway’s defense capabilities as a NATO ally. The torpedoes will bolster Oslo’s ability to counter undersea threats and improve interoperability with allied maritime forces, particularly in the North Atlantic region.
The MK 54 MOD 0 is a versatile anti-submarine warfare weapon deployed by US Navy ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. It combines a guidance and control section powered by commercial-off-the-shelf processors with advanced tactical software, enabling effective performance in shallow and challenging waters. Measuring nearly 107 inches in length and weighing 607 pounds, the system carries a 100-pound high-explosive warhead and is powered by liquid propellant. Its proven effectiveness has made it a preferred system for US allies worldwide, with recent sales also approved for Saudi Arabia, India, and Germany.
