The US Army has announced a substantial investment of nearly $640 million to procure 155mm High Explosive artillery rounds, underscoring its commitment to reinvigorating munitions production under the Special Ammunition and Weapons Systems (SAWS) program. The contract, awarded to Global Military Products, operates on a firm-fixed-price basis and will continue until July 10, 2027, making it one of the largest artillery ammunition deals inked by the Army this year.

The SAWS initiative is designed to acquire ammunition and weapons systems that have not undergone full safety certification or standardization within the US military. These “non-standard” items typically include legacy ammunition and platforms favored by allied nations—especially assets originating from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. The program enhances support for international partners by ensuring the continued supply and safe use of older systems in joint operations.

For the Army, the deal means continuity and resilience in artillery supply, meeting escalating demands in global conflict zones. Army spokesperson Steve Warren disclosed that monthly production of 155mm shells has now reached 40,000, a steep increase from the mere 15,000 rounds produced per month in 2022. Defense officials are pushing to hit a target of 100,000 shells per month by mid-2026, reflecting urgent needs for replenishment.

In a related development, August saw MSM Group North America awarded a contract to construct the Future Artillery Complex. This facility is central to the Department of Defense’s effort to revitalize the aging ammunition industrial base, supporting the Army’s goals of scaling up 155mm shell production and ensuring inventory stocks keep pace with both current operational requirements and future strategic needs.
