Virginia-based defense startup Aventra has raised $3 million in funding to transform conventional unguided munitions into AI-enabled precision weapons capable of striking targets up to 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) away.

The company’s flagship system, known as Piranha, is a modular glide kit designed to retrofit existing ordnance with foldable wings, control surfaces, and AI-based navigation systems. This upgrade provides a low-cost alternative to conventional long-range strike platforms by converting standard bombs into guided glide weapons.

Aventra’s approach involves deploying the Piranha-equipped munitions from high-altitude balloons at around 80,000 feet (24,000 meters). By exploiting stratospheric wind currents, the system can extend operational range while maintaining a small radar signature — offering a novel delivery method for future deep-strike missions.
