The US Army is evaluating a new technology aimed at enhancing situational awareness in the electromagnetic domain. Known as the Spectrum Situational Awareness System (S2AS), the tool is being field-tested to provide soldiers with real-time insight into their signal exposure and surrounding electronic threats.
S2AS is designed to detect spectrum interference, track emissions from military command hubs, and identify potential threats from intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems. This ensures better decision-making in electronically contested environments.
One of its standout features is its ability to trace the origin of suspicious electromagnetic activity—whether from friendly, allied, or hostile sources. By distinguishing signal sources, the system helps reduce friendly-fire risks and strengthens overall battlefield awareness.
With increasing reliance on digital operations, tools like S2AS represent a significant leap in securing the electromagnetic spectrum for military forces.
