Finnish technology company Varjo has introduced its latest generation of mixed reality (MR) headsets aimed at defense and security training. The new lineup features the XR-4 Secure Edition and XR-4 Focal Edition, expanding the company’s XR-4 Series to support complex simulation needs across air, land, and sea domains.
The headsets come equipped with upgraded sensors, enhanced ergonomics for long-duration training, and versions certified for use in radio-silent or classified environments. Improvements also include autofocus passthrough cameras, enhanced low-light performance for night operations, and a more durable frame optimized for military field conditions.
Varjo said the latest models deliver high-fidelity, secure, and immersive experiences, enabling military organizations to merge physical and digital elements within a single training environment. The systems are compatible with current defense simulators used in aviation, ground vehicle operations, and naval platforms, ensuring seamless integration into existing training infrastructures.
The launch comes amid a broader defense trend toward mixed and extended reality adoption to enhance readiness and reduce training costs. The U.S. Army has already deployed Varjo’s XR-3 headsets under its Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainer program, allowing helicopter crews to conduct joint mission rehearsals without full-scale simulators. In Europe, the Finnish Air Force and other defense forces have integrated MR systems into Live-Virtual-Constructive training, while Czech simulators equipped with MR technology have assisted Ukrainian pilots in F-16 training.
