Lithuania has signed a contract with KNDS Deutschland to acquire 12 Leguan armored bridge-laying systems, strengthening the country’s battlefield mobility and combat logistics capabilities. The acquisition is intended to support the movement of tanks and other heavy combat vehicles across difficult terrain during military operations.

Valued at 210 million euros ($251.4 million), the agreement goes beyond platform delivery to include spare parts, operator and technician training, simulators, and technical documentation. This comprehensive support package is designed to ensure long-term operational readiness and sustainment of the systems within the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Each Leguan system will be supplied with two 14-meter bridges and one 26-meter bridge, all compliant with Military Load Class 80 (MLC 80) standards. The MLC 80 rating enables the bridging equipment to support tracked vehicles weighing up to 73 tons and wheeled vehicles up to 84 tons, allowing safe passage for modern main battle tanks and armored formations.

Mounted on a Leopard 2 main battle tank chassis, the Leguan system is operated by a two-person crew and can deploy bridges over obstacles and gaps measuring up to 25 meters in width in less than six minutes. The system is currently in service or on order with 22 partner nations, reflecting its widespread adoption across NATO and allied forces. Prior to Lithuania’s order, the most recent Leguan contract was awarded by the Danish Armed Forces in December.
