Belgium has launched a long-term industrial partnership spanning two decades to transform how the Belgian Army maintains and sustains its land systems, marking one of the country’s most ambitious defense logistics reforms to date. The initiative is aimed at improving readiness, modernizing support processes, and ensuring long-term availability of critical military platforms.

At the center of the effort is the newly established Land Systems Logistic Support (LS²) alliance, which brings together John Cockerill Defense, FN Herstal, and Thales Belgium. The alliance will centralize maintenance, modernization, and logistical support for all Belgian Army land vehicles, communications equipment, and armament systems under a single, coordinated framework.

By consolidating responsibilities that were previously distributed across multiple suppliers and contracts, LS² is designed to streamline sustainment operations, increase fleet availability, and enhance Belgium’s defense industrial autonomy. The partnership also plans to modernize maintenance methods and introduce more efficient technologies across the army’s land platforms.

Implementation will begin at Belgian land force bases, starting with the transfer of existing maintenance activities, the rollout of a transition plan to ensure uninterrupted fleet support, and the gradual buildup of industrial and technical capacity. The move aligns with Belgium’s broader defense strategy, which in recent years has included expanded partnerships covering aircraft sustainment, cyber defense, and long-term weapons supply security.
