Airbus has successfully carried out its first autonomous helicopter flight test using Shield AI’s advanced Hivemind autonomy system. This marks a key milestone in integrating artificial intelligence into next-generation rotary-wing platforms.

For the trial, Airbus employed its H145 helicopter, chosen to streamline development, maintain timelines, and reduce both costs and technical risks associated with new systems testing.

During the flight, Shield AI’s Hivemind software acted as the pilot, seamlessly operating the aircraft. The system was integrated with Airbus’ Helionix avionics suite, which enabled it to oversee mission functions and navigation tasks.

This collaboration highlights growing momentum in applying AI to aviation, aiming to improve autonomy, operational efficiency, and mission safety for future defense and civil helicopter operations.
