Australia has awarded Austal Limited a contract to construct two additional Evolved Cape-class patrol vessels for the country’s Border Force, strengthening maritime security and offshore surveillance capabilities. Valued at AUD 135 million (approximately USD 89.7 million), the agreement expands Canberra’s total orders under the Evolved Cape program to 14 vessels.

The latest procurement follows the September delivery of the ninth vessel, ADV Cape Spencer (P225), highlighting steady progress under the patrol boat program. Australia originally signed the framework agreement in 2020, with the goal of modernizing its patrol fleet and supporting a wide range of border protection, constabulary, and naval support missions.

The Evolved Cape-class patrol vessel measures 58 meters in length and is designed to accommodate a crew of up to 32 personnel. Propulsion is provided by twin Caterpillar 3516C diesel engines, delivering a combined output of 6,770 horsepower through twin shafts, with a bow thruster enhancing maneuverability in confined waters.

In terms of performance, the vessels can achieve a top speed of 26 knots and offer an operational range of up to 4,000 nautical miles, enabling extended patrol missions. The platform can be equipped with a 20–30 mm remote-controlled weapon system or 12.7 mm machine guns, providing flexible armament options for border security and maritime enforcement tasks.
