Charles River Analytics has received a $1 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop an artificial intelligence-based system designed to detect and identify submarines using magnetic field data. The system, known as MAGNETO (Guidance for Naval Enhancement of Tactical Operations), will analyse disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field that may be caused by underwater submarines. This approach offers an alternative to conventional sonar-based detection methods.
The project will focus on improving data processing and analysis capabilities to help identify potential submarine activity more effectively. Since magnetic detection alone may not provide sufficient information for reliable identification, the system will use advanced AI techniques to interpret magnetic signals and support detection efforts. The initiative highlights the U.S. Navy’s interest in applying artificial intelligence to underwater surveillance and developing complementary technologies for future maritime security operations.
