Italian defense company Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS) has secured a contract to supply 48 Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes to the Indian Navy under the Buy Global initiative. The deal supports integration with all six Kalvari-class Scorpene submarines under Project 75, enhancing stealth strike and underwater warfare capabilities in the Indian Ocean. The Black Shark Advanced combines advanced propulsion, guidance, and countermeasure resistance, and is already in service with seven navies globally. The ₹1,896 crore contract, finalized in December 2025, includes full integration support, with deliveries scheduled from April 2028 to early 2030. WASS has emphasized technology transfer and co-production opportunities to support Indian Navy autonomy and domestic industry development, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat policy. The torpedo’s modularity allows future adaptation to Project 75I conventional submarines and potential nuclear-powered platforms, strengthening India’s second-strike capability amid growing Indo-Pacific maritime competition.
