Canada has commissioned two domestic shipbuilders—Vancouver Shipyards and Chantier Davie Canada Inc.—to begin constructing next-generation polar icebreakers for the Coast Guard. Part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, the effort aims to replace aging vessels such as the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent. The government has allocated CAD 3.15 billion ($2.1 billion) to Vancouver Shipyards and CAD 3.25 billion ($2.2 billion) to Chantier Davie to kickstart the initiative.
