Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has officially started production of the fourth Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette for the Finnish Navy, marking a major milestone in Finland’s Squadron 2020 naval modernization program. With this step, all four corvettes are now under construction simultaneously at RMC’s shipyard in Rauma.
The first Pohjanmaa-class vessel was launched in May last year and has since entered the outfitting and systems integration phase. Hull construction of the second ship is nearing completion, while the third and fourth vessels have recently moved into active production, reflecting steady progress across the program.
Once delivered, the four corvettes will replace seven aging surface combatants, including four Rauma-class fast attack craft, two Hämeenmaa-class minelayers, and the previously retired Pohjanmaa-class minelayer. Designed for year-round operations in the Baltic Sea, the new corvettes will form the backbone of Finland’s future surface fleet and enhance maritime security in the region.
Measuring approximately 117 meters in length and capable of speeds exceeding 26 knots, the Pohjanmaa-class ships will be equipped with Gabriel anti-ship missiles, Torped 47 lightweight torpedoes, and RIM-162 ESSM air defense missiles. The vessels feature advanced sensors, including radar and sonar systems, all integrated through Saab’s 9LV combat management system, enabling multi-domain warfare across surface, subsurface, and air threats.
