General Atomics AeroTec Systems has unveiled the Do228 NXT, a next-generation aircraft designed to meet the growing demands of maritime security and border surveillance operations. Built for flexibility in rapidly changing mission environments, the aircraft is optimized for operations from short, unprepared, or remote runways, expanding access to austere coastal and frontier regions.
The Do228 NXT integrates an advanced avionics suite featuring autopilot, modern navigation systems, dual attitude and air data sensors, and multiple safety enhancements. These include terrain awareness and collision avoidance systems, significantly reducing pilot workload during complex and extended missions over land and sea.
Physically, the aircraft measures 16.56 meters in length, 16.97 meters in wingspan, and 4.86 meters in height, offering ample internal volume for mission-specific payloads. Powered by twin Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop engines, the platform can operate at altitudes of up to 25,000 feet and maintain a cruise speed of 240 knots, enabling rapid response across wide operational areas.
The Do228 NXT’s mission versatility includes coastal patrol, naval reconnaissance, protection of underwater infrastructure, search and rescue, and environmental monitoring, particularly across the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions. An in-flight roller door allows safe deployment of rescue equipment during over-water operations. The aircraft is scheduled to make its public debut at Navy Tech 2026, a major defense exhibition in Sweden.
