Germany is advancing its defense modernization agenda with a new order for 20 Airbus H145M light utility helicopters, valued at nearly €1 billion ($1.2 billion). The procurement adds to Berlin’s growing rotorcraft fleet and underscores its commitment to strengthening air mobility and tactical readiness across the armed forces.

Deliveries for the new H145Ms are scheduled between 2027 and 2029, under a 2023 framework agreement that permits Germany to acquire up to 82 units of the multi-role helicopter. With this latest order, 62 helicopters have now been confirmed, representing a major step toward full fleet acquisition. Government projections estimate that maintenance and operations of the entire H145M fleet will cost around €3 billion ($3.5 billion) through 2048, with the proposal soon to be presented to lawmakers.

Unlike earlier deliveries, the new batch is designed to enhance both combat and training capabilities. According to defense officials, 15 helicopters will be configured for combat missions, while five units will serve in training roles for Germany’s elite special forces. The funding comes from the €100 billion special defense fund established in 2022 to accelerate modernization following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The contract will also support the German defense industrial base, benefiting suppliers such as Hensoldt, which will deliver night-vision and electronic warfare systems. Additional subcontractors are expected to provide avionics, communications equipment, and weapons integration, ensuring the H145M fleet remains among Europe’s most advanced light utility aircraft.
